The History Of the Centre

Welney Playing Field is a recreational facility encompassing approximately four acres, featuring a pavilion and designated parking area located in the north-west corner. The field is positioned to the north or north-west of Welney's primary residential zones and is accessible from the B1100 March Road via the unadopted roadway known as Hurn Drove.

The Field has played an important role in the social life of the Welney, young and old, for over 40 years. There is a cricket square and a football pitch. The field hosts traditional summer events, such as the Welney Summer Gala and the German Christmas Market, both of which have raised funds for the William Marshall Centre. Upwell Youth Football team is currently the primary user of the playing field.

The field has full size and junior goals, and a basketball net.

The field features a well-equipped playground for children, which was added in 2025 thanks to support from a CIL grant.
